[I GOT MY DMT]
I tested an Amati 1.5 Mbps modem today.
I remembered JW several months ago mentioning that he tested an Amati modem at ProTech Bookstore in Irving, Texas(Home of GTE). I thought they had moved the trial to Washington, and ive been wondering if ProTech still had any test modems. To my surprise, I was driving by ProTech today and decided to make a quick U-Turn and boy am I glad I did.
Jim, what modems did they have when you tested?? Today, the guy at the store said they had two modems on two seperate computers. I asked which modem was on which pc and he said "We only have Amati modems on both pc's". Just like you Jim, guess which site I accessed first??????? Of course it was SI.
The guy said they originally had Westell modems, but that they were all removed during the first phase of the trial and only Amati modems have been used since. He also mentioned that, prior to removing the Westell modems, most customers disliked the Westell modems and would stand in line to use the pc with the Amati modem. Obviously, I tried to grill this guy for any info he was willing to divulge. He said their store has had no contact with GTE since they took out all of the Westell modems. He mentioned GTE adsl in Florida??? and another company in Chicago. He did not know the modems being used in either. He knew didnt know when GTE would announce and begin offering service in this area(Dallas, Texas) and he didnt know if a faster modem would be sent to ProTech for the consumer to test.
Now for the product. I hate my computer now. I shouldnt have tested cause now I know how good the good life can be. I only utilized a 1.5 Mbps Amati modem, I cant even fathom a modem 4X faster(Overture 8). Gosh it was fast, almost immediate compared to what Im used to(28.8 kbps) The good life is good and Im very confident in my investment decisions.
