First Union Corp (Charlotte, NC) and Open Market Inc (Cambridge, MA) will start to offer services to banking customers and merchants via the Internet. The plan is for First Union to offer its 10 mil customers electronic-banking services, while giving 35,000 merchants the opportunity to sell goods on the Internet computer network. Concerns about the new service involve security and demand. Open Market estimates that only 25% of First Union's customers own personal computers.
