The "Firstest with the Mostest" wins almost every time !

As you noted, the 8086 was, among other things, a couple of years ahead of the 68000.

The story I heard was that the 68000 was delayed because it was all laid out by hand - HAND DRAWN - NO CAD ! - and Motorola took a long time to debug it and get it to work.

Intel had been using CAD tools (Calmas - GDS I & II) and home grown CAD tools (Design Rule Checkers) since the mid to late 70's.

Things are what they are for a very good reason.
