As reported previously, the group of 41 semi-equips had a tremendous
run from 10/9/98 to 12/4/98, a period of 8 weeks. The group sum
gained 90 percent. In the same period the SOX-X was up 72 percent.
During the last 4 weeks of December, however, there has been very
little movement in the group sum. The group loss has been 2 percent
while the SOX-X has gone up 2 percent. A summary of the action can
be seen by the "mini table" below.

10/09/98 12/04/98 8WKS
GROUP 41 Semi Equips 409 778 90 %
SOX-X Phili Semiconductor Index 201 345 72 %

12/04/98 12/31/98 4 WKS
GROUP 41 Semi Equips 778 760 -2 %
SOX-X Phili Semiconductor Index 345 351 2 %

The individual action of each stock in the group over the last 4
weeks is shown in the following table. There are only 11 stocks up,
1 stock with no change, and 29 stocks are down. 15 of the worst
performing stocks in the table are down by over 10 percent. There
are just a few stocks that are doing "yeoman" work to counter the
losses of the 29 stocks during the last 4 weeks.

Another way to summarize the action of the last 3 months is to look
at the 2 segments shown in the small table above. October and
November were great in terms of stock appreciation, but December has
seen some deterioration in the group performance. Many of the stocks
in the group have seen substantial deterioration during the last 4
weeks. Hopefully, January will see a resumption of appreciation for
the group.
