Since it is the end of the calendar year, it is of some interest to see how the semi-equips performed over the past year. A comparison can be made with the closing prices at the end of 1997. The table below shows the semi-equips with a group sum loss of 8 percent for the year. Over the same period, the SOX-X was up 33 percent. Of the 41 stocks, 8 were up for the year, while 33 were down. Only one stock, VECO, had a triple digit gain of 142 percent. It far surpassed the performance of any other stock in the group over this time period.
