Sam, it is my understanding that the purpose of an Index fund is to exactly match the index numbers. A S&P 500 fund should go up or down exactly as the Index goes up and down. If it "beats the Index", it isn't doing its job. So for that reason, the managers don't give a "rat's ass" what AOl does. They are paid to match the index.
