Since the first runner-up was the pope, perhaps the 18% were ex-communicated or something.

Actually, that poll is suspect. It was a telephone poll and 4% said Margaret Thatcher and 3% Madeleine Albright on the women's side. I don't think that many people know who these women are or if they did would say they admire them most. It is obvious the people called were just geven a short list of celebrities and most people chose the most familiar names.
