Quotes Plus Criteria

You can write scans to look for some fundamental data.

I am personally more interesting in scanning for early signs of changes in long term trends.

For example one scan I have looks for stocks that have crossed above the 160d exponential moving average in the last 5 days but that prior to that were below it for at least a month and are significantly off their highs of the last 12 months. I can then transfer them to a Metastock directory to watch for the first pullback to the 160d EMA for a possible purchase.

Metastock can do anything Quotes Plus can do and much more. The problem is that there are about 10,000 stocks on US markets. The value of QP is to conveniently narrow the list before you use Metastock.

QP adjusts for splits, etc in its own database, but not in Metastock directories, so it is better to minimize the Metastock directories.

QP only supplies daily data, not intraday data. It is available about 6:45 pm.

Re Moving Average Types

Simple moving averages are slower and provide fewer false signals. Exponential moving averages and others are faster but can whipsaw you and eat up a lot of commissions.

It really is a matter of preference, imho.
