This was a real hard race where many died. Lots of news time spent on rescue here in Australia. Not a small accomplishment to have made it through, let alone to win.

Oracle's Ellison wins fatal yacht race

IDG News Service, 12/30/98

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison's yacht came in first in the Australian race that left at least five dead, according to news reports yesterday.

Ellison was in tears after surviving what he said were the worst sea conditions he had ever experienced, according to wire reports on Dow Jones News Service.

Ellison's boat, Sayonara, arrived Tuesday morning about 8 a.m. local time, according to various news reports.

Ellison, who also raced last year, was asked if he would return for the Sydney-to-Hobart race. He responded according to the news report: "My first reaction is not if I live to a thousand years. But who knows?"

"It was just awful, I've never experienced anything remotely like this," said Ellison, reportedly. "It's been a very emotional experience to get here. This is not what this is supposed to be about. A lot of us are upset."

Ellison's crew learned of the deaths of their competitors via radio before arriving.
