Read Post #770--that makes sense to me. You are way off base. You are giving a credible explanation for a more traditional fund where the managers PICK the stocks to invest in. In an index fund there is no picking, no options, no choices and the reason fund families have several other funds--so Mr. and Mrs. Jones can move their money into them when the index funds are doing poorly.

By the way, do you ever look at the lists of the WORST performing funds (even this year there were many more than 50% down)? Someone out there has their money in them. There are always people who are waiting for that "any day now" turn around.
