AOL had a crazy hour of trading on Thursday. Here's an excerpt from my site's (tigerinvestor) market update:

"Crazy AOL Trading
America Online was a roller-coaster ride throughout the day with the big S&P 500 funds trying to add AOL into their portfolio's for the new year. In the last hour the stock jumped around from the low to high 140s numerous times. Around 3:45 or so CNBC announced a 8.2 million share buy imbalance in the AOL pit on the NYSE (Thanks CNBC). The funny part was the guy on the floor who said he felt uncomfortable saying anything about what was happening in the AOL pit. :) However the stock tanked in a weird way from 147 to 144 right before the 4pm close. Institutions, probably the funds, kept buying after-hours pushing it to 160 and then down to 155 1/8. One person said he saw a 16 million share block go across the tape. If that is true, that's a $2.3 Billion trade. Wow. My guess is that it was the Vanguard 500 Index fund."
