Croc,

Amazed it took me this long to find this. I grew up paddling and hiking around the northeast, and eventually managed to get to much of the west before taking off for the Philippines (long story) where I've been for most of the last 20 years. Been doing the same stuff here, in fact just finished writing most of an adventure travel guide to the country. So if anyone's considering an off-the-wall vacation in these parts, I can certainly provide a good deal of information.

Hiking here is jungle, volcanoes, some tropical montane forest; interesting tribal cultures. Not too many beaten tracks. Paddling is either in the ocean or white water; some interesting water in both cases, and it's always warm. I miss the idea of an open-decked boat over a still lake, with reflections of fir and snowcapped mountains, but running a good sea kayak over a virgin coral reef with a weird limestone tower hanging overhead is pretty cool as well. And the warm water makes white water much more inviting. There's a stream near here that is clear enough to see every stone in the bottom of 20 feet of water. I still freeze up before diving into it, due to some vestigial temperate-zone conviction that any water that clear must be frigid, but it's no more than pleasantly cool. Which is something to appreciate in the rainy season - it drops 100 meters in our 3.5 km. run, and kicks up some decent rapids.

Looking forward to exchanging tales of the outdoors, in all our different environments...

Steve
