Hi Pat,
U.S. West announce that they will spend $3 billion on network upgrade this year. Do you know they are current Newbridge customer ? I can only find that they did a joint demo on DSL last year(1997) on NETWORK-INTERROP at Newbridge Website. I trust you can do some good reserach on this for all of us.
Thanks

U S West to Spend $3 Billion In 1999 to Upgrade Network
By an INTERACTIVE JOURNAL Staff Reporter
DENVER -- U S West Inc. said it expects to invest more than $3 billion in 1999 to upgrade its network and improve voice and data services in its 14-state region.
The investment will speed the rollout of consumer high-speed data services, such as its MegaBit digital-subscriber-line service, U S West said.
For the year, the company said it deployed MegaBit in central offices serving more than 5.5 million customer lines -- giving it the lead among consumer DSL providers. By year end, U S West said more than 20,000 customers are expected to be using the service, which is the phone companies' answer to cable firms' high-speed cable modems.
The company said its traditional dial-up Internet service, U S. West.net, had more than 100,000 subscribers in 1998, its first year in operation.
Also, the company said plans to increase deployment of its wireless service to Salt Lake City, as well as other unspecified markets, and provide high-speed video digital subscriber line service in Phoenix.
U S West said the upgrades wouldn't leave consumers behind. In a statement, President and Chief Executive Solomon D. Trujillo, said the upgrades would involve the entire U S West network, claiming that rival local-phone providers "focus on serving a handful of lucrative business customers and ignoring everybody else."

Newbridge Networks Provides Key Components of U S WEST !NTERPRISE DSL Services Solutions
!NTERPRISE Booth Features First Demonstration of End-to-End Service Provisioning Over a Multivendor Broadband Network
NETWORLD+INTEROP, Las Vegas, Nevada, May 6, 1997 -- !NTERPRISE Networking Services, the data integration arm of U S WEST, is demonstrating in booth #5017 at Networld+Interop new capabilities for the rapid provisioning of end-user digital subscriber line (DSL) services over a Newbridge Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) backbone. The Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch, MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager and Connect Exec supply vital components to speed and simplify service provisioning.
Newbridge Networks solves the issue of connecting a service provider's Operational Support System (OSS) to managed broadband networks with Connect Exec, a Telecommunications Management Network (TMN)-compliant Q3 gateway to the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager. Based on Network Management Forum specifications, Connect Exec enables !NTERPRISE's rapid development of a more integrated OSS application.
"The Newbridge ATM and management products have accelerated our creation of an integrated DSL solution which facilitates end-to-end provisioning and allows us to support interoperability in multivendor environments," said Joe Glynn, Director of Product Marketing for MegaBit Services, !NTERPRISE.
For the demonstration, !NTERPRISE has created a model of its high-speed digital subscriber line (HDSL) access to its Internet service offering, !NTERACT. The demonstration displays the efficient creation of end-to-end connections with a click of the mouse over multivendor, multitechnology networks. !NTERPRISE intends to evolve this application into a production environment.
The demo configuration connects PCs to HDSL modems, ultimately connecting to the central office. The HDSL modems are linked to Ethernet switches, which switch frames according to media access control (MAC) addresses, over ATM virtual channel connections into the wide area network (WAN). Packets travel across the network backbone, represented by the Newbridge MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch, and are connected to !NTERACT via frame relay permanent virtual circuits (PVCs).
As part of the demonstration, DSET Corporation, the largest provider of TMN toolkits and solutions for the telecommunications industry, provided a common management interface protocol (CMIP) manager for the !NTERPRISE OSS. The Newbridge Connect Exec gateway also uses a CMIP agent toolkit from DSET.
"U S WEST !NTERPRISE continues to be a leader in providing innovative services to its customer, and Newbridge is very pleased to work with them on this project," said Irfan Ali, Vice President, Newbridge Networks. "This application further demonstrates the Newbridge commitment to provide customers with creative broadband solutions that are fully managed on an end-to-end basis."
The Public Communication Networks Group of Siemens AG (Munich, Germany) and Newbridge Networks (Kanata, Canada) formed a networking alliance in 1996 to provide carriers worldwide with the most comprehensive and advanced ATM solution set. With this agreement, the two companies have unified their ATM product lines under the MainStreetXpress brand and assembled the most extensive ATM research and development operation -- 1,500 engineers in five countries. Together, Newbridge Networks, a world leader in ATM, and Siemens, a world leader in central office switching, include among their customers all the world's major telecommunications carriers.
Newbridge Networks designs, manufactures and services a comprehensive family of networking products and systems that delivers the power of multimedia communications to organizations in more than 100 countries throughout the world. Newbridge products are the choice of an expanding range of customers which includes the world's 200 largest telecommunications service providers, and more than 10,000 corporations, government organizations, and other institutions.
