FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (Dow Jones) -- Lucent Technologies Inc. engineers proposed key elements it believes a special standards committee should incorporate when developing an industry standard for 56 - kpbs modem transmission.
while appearing before the committe thursday, Lucent engineers proposed a method of determining quickly whether the modem can support 56-kpbs transmission, based on the way the telephone call was routed, or whether the modem must revert to more conventional speeds, such as 33.6. Lucent also discussed test results it has conducted on 56-kpbs tranmission over actual phone lines and proposed techniques to achieve high-speed upstream rates faster than 33.6.
The committe, created by the U.S. telecommunications industry association and the electronics industry associaton last november, has been meeting monthly to establish an interim U.S. standard for so-called "pulse code modulation" modems that can commect personal computers to the interment over regular analog phone lines at up to 56 kpbs, which is twice the speed of most modems in use.
