Fred, could it be that David Archibald meant "reduction in R&D costs" not inventories? The balance sheet shows no inventory to speak of, and the $2.2 from Delphi was taken as "reduction in R&D costs" in the P&L statement, and as Larry mentioned, possibly as financing in the balance sheet statement (I still have a problem with the last one, since the balance sheet does derive from the P&L, but that is just another minor detail).
