I would have to agree. A poster on Yahoo's message boards did the math, taking the percentage of 80% for books 20% for CD's (from amzn's last quarterly statement and assuming reasonable growth of CDs) and multiplying the averave book width of 3/4 inch and the average CD width of 1/3 inch multipled out by the length in miles that the PR guy gave. It ended up with a figure of around 190-220 million if I recall correctly.

In any case, Amazon is indeed within a quiet period regarding sales/earnings and giving this sort of information out is quite illegal. I suppose next quarter he'll just flat out give the sales figures in british pounds or something equally ridiculous. Maybe there's a loophole that says you can describe the figures any way you want as long as you dont mention dollar amounts? (not likely)

Of course, nothing surprises me with these guys anymore. Just a week earlier Amazon sponsored a "poll" showing that consumers planned to spend 300% more online than last year, and that books and CDs would be their most popular purchase. A great way to keep the flow of hype press releases going, while sidestepping securities regulations.
