HiSpeed. The average trader (the individual). Do you think that the individuals are the major shorters of stock? My take is that much is borrowed and shorted to box long derivative positions of any kind (options, preferred stock...) If no more open (to be bought back rather than covered by newly issued) short positions are entered now, how do you think support for the stock price is created. Support which is also provided by reducing the tradeable float by short covering at a lower price. I'm not that confident about the impact of the short interest and availability of stock. C.
