Where do you think Ellison got the appliance idea from? There are some higher ups at NetApp that used to work for Ellison. Oracle was an early customer of NTAP in the software development labs, to speed up software development. Soon, the idea of certifying NTAP filers as the only Oracle supported NFS mount of Oracle data became a high priority for NetApp. Oracle conducted some major benchmarking and also had access to NTAP's "ONTAP" OS to see how error recovery and so forth we handled. A couple of minor changes (having to do with stale handles) were required by Oracle. NTAP made the changes and Oracle certified the Netapp filer as the only supported NFS mount.

It was just a few months after that that Oracle and Sun started discussing Raw Iron.

It is a great concept, and I think they will make it work. It could be critical to Oracle's survival as an RDBMS company, IMHO. It is not clear to me whether it is intended to compete with NTAP. It seems more narrowly focused. Also, its for Oracle databases only and is an application server, as opposed to a data server. NTAP has much broader appeal.
