* OT, sort of * Assuming you're using Win95/98 or WinNT, press Windows Key-R (which means run), and then "cmd" or "command" to get to a command-line prompt. Then type "ping cbs.com" or "ping whitehouse.gov" while you're online. If you see a bunch of weird numbers coming back, you have what people usually call a direct connection. But it's becoming a trivial distinction, because so many people have a TCP/IP connection in one way or another these days. As long as you're able to do what you want to do online, it's direct enough for you.
