Rahul, I also have heard that LGND will not be presenting at
Merrill this year. Merrill used to rate LGND. They gave it
their second highest rating for the short term, and their
highest rating long term. I had heard that they stopped coverage
because their analyst left. I'm not sure why they haven't
started again (and since their old rating began well over
a year ago I suspect LGND would get a high rating for both short
and long term). Merrill was involved with the underwriting of
the ALRIZ IPO 1 1/2 years ago. I believe Merrill also has
strong ties with LGND's retinoid partner, AGN. AGN of course
has been a part of takeover rumors for quite some time and it
also sounded like they almost had a deal with PNU, but Volvo
got in the way. I think Volvo is now out of the picture, but
I think that PNU's CEO is also gone, so I'm not sure where things
stand. A takeover of LGND comes up occasionally and they did
just pass a shareholder's rights clause, but I think that if Merrill
is not covering LGND because of an ongoing M&A, its more likely
to be related to AGN than LGND.
