New York Company Develops Fuel Cells for Use in the Home EarthVision Reports 12/29/98 LATHAM, NY, December 29, 1998 -- A small, New York-based research venture announced that it has developed a natural gas-based fuel cell system, which it says is an important step in its goal of making the technology available for residential use. Reuters reported that the company, called Plug Power, is developing the technology to enable homes that already use natural gas for heating and cooking to use that same energy source to generate electricity. More than 70 million homes in the United States use natural gas for heating and cooking. Using this technology, Plug Power estimates that households will be able to reduce their electricity costs by as much as 20 percent. Plug Power is a joint venture of Detroit-based DTE Energy Co. and Mechanical Technology Inc. It recently received a $3 million award from the New York State Research and Development authority for delivery of 80 residential-sized fuel cell systems over the next 30 months.
