Michael,

Although Medicare reimbursement is a key goal for Vasomedical, it is important that they obtain it at the right price point. Presently they have 105 major insurers reimbursing for EECP treatment. A number of them are paying the $8K - $9K that it costs to provide an EECP 35 hour treatment regimen. What Vasomedical does not want to have happen is for Medicare to announce that they will reimburse at a significantly lower rate. If so, the lower rate would become the standard for insurers to offer. This action would force privately insured patients to forego treatment or pay more money out of their pocket which would reduce the existing demand for the treatment.

It is also important to note that unlike FDA approval for a new drug or medical device, there is no official procedure to get medicare reimbursement. Vasomedical is trying to work with HICFA to obtain reimbursement at a rate at which it is economically attractive to provide the service. However, there is no set time table by which a decision needs to be given.

It appears now more than ever that Vasomedical will ultimately be successful. However, the success will come slower than many have predicted. I look for steady progress to be made in 1999 with more centers opening and increasing sales as more cardiologists choose to offer the benefits of EECP to their patients.

Best Regards,
