At $2.7K MSRP, the current flat-panel offering is destined to be a niche product and niche products mean low volume. A really good 21" monitor goes for $1.4K and "decent" monitors are going for under $1k. Price will have to be comprable before flat panels are adopted by the consumer market. Plus, despite the marketing statements, the interface between the video card and the LCD has not been standardized in any meaningful way, so if you buy one of these combos, you are, in all likelihood, stuck with using #9 cards now and in the future and #9 has consistently lagged the market in 3D performance. (I should know, I'm using a 32MB RevolutionIV to write this on right now.)

My reading of all the press releases turned up no exclusivity arrangement between Hitachi and anyone else. There is an exclusivity agreement between #9 and SGI to market this particular display, but as far as I can tell, it places no restrictions on who Hitachi can sell the bare "tube" too.

It's been said that "you can always tell the pioneers by the arrows in their backs," unfortunately, I think #9 is going to get plenty of arrows in their back in the flat panel market.
