Mark,
I found some interesting articles from NTT Japan. Some of the articles are dated (about 2 years) but the last one appears to have been a recent release.

This appears to be about 2 years old. Although it obviously isn't Portico / MagicTalk, it sure sounds a lot like it: pr.info.ntt.co.jp NTT FAN, Inc., an NTT-affiliate, launched on March 12 a trial of its Paseo multimedia online service among limited users, with a larger trial to begin May 1. Paseo is a new multimedia network service offering a very friendly user interface for portable data equipment as well as personal computer software. It supports the intelligent mail that comprises voice, illustrations, music, animation and handwriting. It also makes possible broadcast-type services, transmits messages to facsimile machines and pagers, and supports text mail in English via the Internet. In future, the service will add forums; allow access to Angel Line, a telephone directory assistance service; and offer other applications. The trial, using English software only, will involve 5,000 users between March 12 and January 31, 1997. The results will be used to create a full-scale commercial service using Japanese-language software. . The trial employs the technology provided by General Magic, a software developer in the United States. Participants in the trial include Japanese corporations that have invested in General Magic, such as NTT and Sony, which also have ownership in NTT FAN. They are joined by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., which manufactures terminals used in the trial, as well as Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd., Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, which plan to develop independent businesses using Paseo.
pr.info.ntt.co.jp 2. Alliances in multimedia field a. Agent communications services NTT has established a technical alliance with U.S.-based General Magic, the developer of Magic Cap software for portable information terminals and Telescript technology for E-mail. Together they have developed a multimedia service called Paseo, which was commercialized by NTT Fan, Inc., a joint venture between NTT, AT&T and Sony Corporation since March 1995.
This appears to be dated 09/16/98 and shows some sort of testing of a translation test set. I got this when I ran a search on GMGC on the NTT site.: kecl.ntt.co.jp |
