Safe sex implies sex that protects one from STD's, not sex that protects one from pregnancy. The use of a condom has been found to be the most reliable way to protect yourself from STD's, and is therefore the basis of "safe sex."
Tawdry, according to Webster's, is "showy, but of very poor quality." I believe that at least the cigar fits this definition. But it is a value judgment, and as such has no meaning in a debate, so I withdraw that characterization.
As for your points about sexual repression, I agree wholeheartedly. But as this nation has, due to its Christian heritage, always been sexually repressed to at least some degree I don't expect it to stop any time soon. And, to me at least, this whole thing has never been about sex. I know that to some people it is, but I believe that the people who attack Clinton because of sex are just as wrong as the ones who defend him because of it. Nowhere in the articles of impeachment is sex mentioned, and what the Senate does with those articles is all that really matters.
