Gauguin, All,

No, I wasn't joking. I actually do hose down my keyboards with the shower massager and mild soap. However, this may be one of those things that goes swimmingly for some but turns disastrous for others, and with no common denominator being obvious.

I guess I should mention that not do I only beat the bejeebers out of computer keyboards, I anoint them with coffee, foodstuffs, and cigarette ashes. I am an incorrigible keyboard abuser. If keyboards had odometers, mine would be on the fourth go-round--at least! And yes, I have had to deep-six a couple of keyboards post cleaning, but they were pretty far gone to begin with and probably already beyond any redemption.

Holly's unorthodox keyboard cleaning instructions: Taking the keyboards apart means that I remove all the visible screws and separate the keyboard from its case, resulting in two or perhaps three big pieces--top, bottom, and innards. I very gently lather the part with the innards, allow the lather to remain for a few minutes, and then rinse, but do not repeat. (Sorry, Alex.) I then shake out the excess water and finish it off with the blow-dryer. I allow the keyboard to remain apart for a day or two, to ensure thorough drying, and then reassemble it.

Now that I think of it, maybe you shouldn't try this at home. Maybe prying off the offending keytop, tweezing and shaking out the grit, and polishing off with an isopropyl alcohol swab would be preferable.

ALWAYS turn off the computer before detaching and reattaching the keyboard or any other component. Seriously.

Holly
