skeeter, I am not saying that Samsung's yields of 256MB chips would be lower than yields would be for anyone else. As I have said, Samsung clearly is a technology leader. What I said was that Samsung is using their advanced production technology to produce next generation chips at low yields but with high prices. Samsung has advanced production. MU has advanced production. Both could make 256MB chips if they want to. But larger chips mean larger die sizes, which means substantially lower yields. And it means lower yields for MU, Samsung, Toshiba, and everyone else.

Even with low yields, 256MB chips will be profitable for Samsung if the price is high enough. Thus electing to begin 256MB production is not unreasonable for Samsung. MU has too much on its plate to do this, too, though they could. Rather I expect them to focus its energy on upgrading the TI fabs, and on converting to .18µ.
