Current state of things at Corel:

1) Millions of dollars in Java R&D money down the toilet with nothing to show for it but a highly speculative investment currently valued at 4 million dollars in a small private company.

2) Millions of dollars in Netwinder development probably down the toilet. Despite rumors that it is selling "like hotcakes," it has been available since September and no deals have been announced and Corel has not said anything positive about sales.

3) Corel and Linux. Even the biggest Linux zealots will tell you that it will be years before Linux breaks through on the desktop. Even if this year's Linux hype turns out to be more than last year's Java hype, Corel will benefit very little from Linux server installations while Windows remains on the desktop. No significant revenue this year.

4) Corel will show a profit from Draw and WordPerfect sales because they have finally cut their ridiculous expenses. But the Office Productivity and Graphics markets are mature and highly competitive. There is little room for growth in these categories and the stock market rewards growth.

In short, Corel has done the minimum necessary to survive as a profitable company and has benefited from the Linux hype. Check back again with your "I told you so" if the shares hit double digits this year and I will be suitably humble.
