Nokia and Ben Nederland sign GSM 1800 expansion deal - bringing enhanced data services

The other point is that it is in the heart of Europe. The other DCS/GSM contracts were mainly in Asia and built on existing infrastructure for GSM 900, therefore the total value tends to be lower. The order underlines the strength and many months advantage over their chief rivals in this particular market segment (DCS/GSM 1800)"
(January 4, 1999) - Nokia is to provide a GSM 1800 network expansion for Ben Nederland (formerly Proximus Nederland), a joint venture between Belgacom and Tele Danmark. The agreement, valued at over USD 100 million will enable the creation of a wide range of enhanced services for GSM subscribers in The Netherlands.
The launch of Ben Nederland's nationwide network is scheduled for February 1999. Nokia will supply mobile switching centres, home location registers, as well as a base stations, base station controllers and the Nokia NMS Network Management System. An extensive range of customer services will be provided, covering network planning, site acquisition, civil works, installation and commissioning of all network elements. Nokia will also maintain and support system operations, following the network's commercial launch.
In addition, Nokia will provide Ben Nederland with its Artus Messaging Platform, for the provision of Internet-based wireless data services. Nokia's Intelligent Network solution will also be implemented for the creation of further advanced GSM services. This network expansion strengthens Nokia's position as a leading GSM network supplier in The Netherlands.
