I think the V6 that Mazda used to offer in the MX-3 was only 1.8 liters also. These are tiny pistons. The Toyota is particularly unique in that theirs is a straight 6. Toyota has always liked those (as does BMW).

Pierre is right, belt driven cams are really no problem. They will need to be replaced, but they're more efficient and quiet. A few motors are still using chain drive to avoid needing the belt replacement, as some consumers are gun shy. Ideal method is gear drive, but it's very noisy and expensive. I had them on my Honda VFR, and they sounded like a supercharger. They are the ultimate for accurate valve timing.
