Sun.Net Real-World Tests Begin

Sun Microsystems Inc. today is starting
real-world tests of a technology that promises
to let corporations offer remote workers
unheard-of levels of systems access.

Unlike other remote access systems that
require specific client software, usually on a
laptop lugged by the business traveler,
Sun.Net may be accessed from any
computer or other network device capable of
supporting a browser. Wells said he could
download his e-mail from Sun.Net by
connecting with his Motorola Inc. 2000 pager,
which has a small text screen.

Because of its emphasis on user
identification and authentication, Wells said,
the Sun.Net server's response to a user can
be highly individualized, opening access to a
set of desktop or "Webtop" applications that
reflect the user's work and interests. The
applications reside on a server inside the
company's walls, not the device used for
remote access, he noted.
