Tunica and Thread,

My (possibly faulty) understanding was that index funds usually mirror the index via the futures market and not the equities market directly (as was done in the early days of indexing which used to be an extremely difficult procedure). I am therefore rather surprised by all this talk about Vanguard buying AOL stock thus pushing price up etc. (Background: I own AOL and like the stock regardless of index fund buying.) Would appreciate any explanation.

TIA!
