But there are a handful of market makers who I believe primarily represent one or two individuals or funds, and as of late have been selling short a huge volume of AAPL shares.

Appreciate the information about Level II activity. I will get to it myself when I retire, if I have any money left {g}. How do you determine whether an order placed is a short or a sell. If I come in at the ask to sell 1,000 shares short, is there some sort of indication on the Level II screen that it is a short position? Thanks for your response.
