NT, partitions, Spot's comments, my own layout
FWIW, I agree 100% with Spots on NT, backup, and partition priorities. I also echo his assessment that one shouldn't worry about a (more informed) NT reinstall early in the game.
But I also agree with ZP's previous post that doing a drive image ASAP is advisable. See below.
Here is my partition strategy, again FWIW:
Drive 1 (11 gig:)
primary partition:
c: FAT 95 AND with an NT maintanence minimal install; 1 gig;
extended partition:
d: NTFS NT main install; just OS and utilities 2 gig e: NTFS most apps and data 8 gig
Drive 2 (6 gig:)
no primary, only an extended partition, 3 FAT logical partitions (e,f,g)
This setup gives me NTFS robustness for system files, apps, etc., but leaves lots of FAT room for maintenance and drive image files. This utility grows more indispensible for me all the time. I can't overstress the joys of being able to make many backups of all but my e: drive to drive image files. Plus, this lets you archieve templates of various stages in the full win 9x/NT install process. Very helpful if you're configuring another machine or want to change hardware and start from a place before no-longer-present hardware was installed.
Hope this is useful. Questions (or comments) welcome. |
