Steve and Dave,
Now you've got me looking very closely at the Wal-Mart TCBG pouch. First of all, the pouch definitely includes aluminum foil. I know this because I also have some film samples of the Wal-Mart product. On one side is solid artwork under a plastic film, on the other side I can see the aluminum foil.
I was confused about this initially also, as TCBG spring water products come in a clear package. The answer I got from Jon was that they had to use a foil package just like Capri Sun because the juice products are hot filled - I think he said over 200 degrees. Thus, the product is pasteurized to kill any microorganisms. After a 5 day wait, the shipments are sampled to verify that the pasteurization was successful. After that, the product ships.
Anyhow, if someone were to try to open a package on its side, I think the juice would come out both the straw and the small area (approx. 1/4") around the straw that is opened when the top is torn off. The straw is straight, not bent. Of course, if the package is opened in its normal vertical position, the few drops of liquid that might have surrounded the straw when the pouch was non-vertical, would fall back into the pouch. It appears to be a nice design.
As far as micro-waving goes, I will leave that test to someone else!
