Odds & ends... tri-mode phone covers two digital and one analog frequency. AT&T refuses to carry any other kind of phones for the One Rate Plan, Mot's big problem with TDMA Startac is the fact that it is only a dual-mode phone. In CDMA market, tri-mode phones are also the most appealing to consumers and I see this as one of the big issues of 1999 - who can come up with an appealing tri-mode CDMA model by next summer? Multi-standard digital phones (GSM + TDMA, etc.) should arrive by next winter, probably not before. Looks like CDMA won't be included in the first models.

There's some talk about Nokia debuting a satellite phone, but probably not in the near future. I think they are more focused on the world phone concept (packing several land-based digital standards into one cheap, compact model). GSM-800/GSM-900/TDMA/AMPS would have a great global footprint.

Nokia's GSM-1800 network deals just keep coming. They lost the key Russian bidding competition to Motorola, but considering that Russia is the only mobile phone market in the world that is actually *shrinking* I'm not too worried about that.

Gotta love that euro: the problems with Finnish currency are finally over. Currency risk involved with owning Nokia is now very small. Nokia is a staple stock in many diversified European mutual funds - these are currently getting snapped up by Asian investors trying to lessen their exposure to Wall Street and dollar.

Mika is right - looks like GEOS is history. 9110 will probably be the last Nokia smartphone using it. Symbian should be the OS for all future smartphone from Motorola, Nokia and Ericsson as they try to create a universal OS for the industry.
