Patrick, I don't know how it can happen. My husband walked out after ten years of marriage and I still don't understand how he could, even though we were having rough spots.

There are countering examples, however. Until recently, I was seeing seriously a friend whose wife of 12 years decided that the marriage was over and insisted he move out and that they divorce. He and I had been friends for more than 20 years; we became more and started to think about a possible future.

Then his wife learned that he was seeing me and realized that time would not stand still in case she wanted to pick up her option some time. It made her think about the seriousness of ending a marriage.

They are back together and giving it a more wholehearted try than has been the case for some time. There's hope left.
