AirTouch Confirms Vodafone Offer
By NOELLE KNOX AP Business Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - AirTouch Communications Inc., already in talks with Bell Atlantic about a merger that would create a nationwide cellular telephone network, said today it has received a rival offer from Britain's Vodafone Group PLC (NYSE:VOD - news).

Vodafone is the largest mobile phone service provider in Britain and has been expanding its cellular coverage in Europe.

San Francisco-based AirTouch is the largest independent wireless company in the United States, and has interests in 12 international cellular joint ventures.

The Wall Street Journal reported today that the Vodafone offer topped Bell Atlantic's proposal, which is reported to be around $45 billion, though neither company would confirm the price. Bell Atlantic declined comment today Vodafone's offer.

Analysts in the United States had commended a possible Bell Atlantic deal with AirTouch, saying that it would lead to lower cellular phone bills.
