Motorola Partners With Zephyr Telecommunications Inc. To Support Worldwide Voice Over IP Network Zephyr, a 'Carrier's Carrier,' Delivers Innovative High-Quality, Low-Cost, <>
January 5, 1999
/PRNewswire/ Motorola's Internet and Networking Group (ING), a leader in the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) market, today announced a strategic relationship with Zephyr Telecommunications Inc. Zephyr Telecommunications is an integrated, facilities-based telecommunications company providing international long distance (ILD) services to customers in the U.S. and abroad.
Using Motorola's Vanguard 6560 multiservice router, which incorporates digital IP technology, Zephyr is able to broaden its telecommunication services by offering voice, data, video and Internet access at the lowest possible price while maintaining a high quality of service. In addition, this IP network is robust, allowing Zephyr to prioritize information and integrate multimedia.
"In a nutshell, Motorola knows voice and that's why we work well together, " said Zephyr's founder and CEO, Dr. Terrence McGarty. "Our challenge is how well we manage the equipment as we grow. That's why we view Motorola not as a supplier, but as a strategic partner," continued McGarty.
"This is a very exciting relationship for us," said Walt Prusak, vice president, worldwide marketing, Motorola's ING. "Zephyr is demonstrating how an all-IP network backbone can help meet the challenge of providing a full set of telecommunications services including voice, data and video as well as full Internet access -- all on a global scale. Equally important to high quality voice are the advanced features available through Motorola's gateway offerings that enable Voice over IP to have the same capabilities we receive from circuit switched carriers. It's an ideal match between two leading edge, visionary companies with the skills to offer low-cost, feature-rich, high- quality service."
For Zephyr, IP is not only cost-effective but also an efficient transport system. For example, the company can offer multiple country conference calls without having to use a bridge.
Zephyr has rolled out its network in eight countries -- Poland, Czech Republic, Russia, Germany, Korea, Switzerland, U.K. and the U.S. -- using the Vanguard 6560 multiservice router, that interfaces directly with local telecom switches. Currently, the network has a capacity of four to five million minutes each month. Zephyr plans to triple this capacity within the next two years and to extend its network to more than 20 countries. Zephyr plans to integrate IP into its local telephony network once the testing of the network overseas is complete.
