One of the remarkable things about companies like MSFT and INTC is that they were big very well recognized gorillas 5 or 6 years ago, but have continued to outperform the market. My retirement from my day job was financed by an "imprudent " over weighted position in Intel years ago , but the stock continues to rise. You don't have to find gorilla in early stages to do well. As far as future gorillas go, my best candidates are RMBS and CTXS , but this is a long shot and they are both fully priced. Maybe more important than trying to identify distant future potential of companies of this sort is just recognizing gorillas in early maturity, and sticking with them. One big advantage of doing this is that institutional behavior will put them on sale at intervals giving individual investors a chance at bargains. When the institutions are short of cash they will sell the big liquid techs, but it will also be the first ones they buy back a few months later.
I really like CSCO, it is my biggest holding today. BTW, you were 100% right about SAP, though I suspect that at some point it will be a good investment again.
