America Online Taps CBS as Exclusive Broadcast News Provider

New York, Jan. 5 (Bloomberg) -- America Online Inc., the No. 1 online service, said it chose CBS Corp.'s CBS News as its sole broadcast news provider, broadening the media company's exposure on the Internet and giving AOL a better way to promote itself on television.

Financial terms weren't disclosed, though the companies said they're giving each other the promotional value of having their brands on each other's service. They'll also share advertising revenue generated on areas of AOL's service that feature CBS News.

The move will make CBS News available to AOL's 15 million subscribers and the 2 million reached by its CompuServe division, widening the news service's distribution and boosting its presence on the Internet, where it's lagged other broadcast competitors. AOL, meanwhile, will be able to expand its promotion on television across many CBS News programs, including the highly rated ''60 Minutes'' and ''48 Hours.''

CBS, which is ranked No. 1 in prime-time entertainment programming, will provide news on AOL, CompuServe and AOL.com and will use its broadcasters to help produce and promote the AOL Live chat service.

CBS News has been looking for ways to reach viewers outside of its main television network as broadcast ratings decline in the face of rising competition from cable TV. The network last year held talks with Time Warner Inc.'s cable news service CNN about a possible alliance, though those talks never developed.

CBS and AOL have worked together in the past. The network used Dulles, Virginia-based AOL to promote the start of its new fall prime-time programming lineup.

AOL also features reports from Bloomberg News, a unit of Bloomberg LP, and from the Associated Press, Business Week and Newsweek, among others.

New York-based CBS also has investments online through CBS Sportsline, a sports news site on the Internet, and MarketWatch.com, a joint venture with Data Broadcasting Corp.

CBS shares rose 11/16 to 32 9/16 in midday trading, while AOL rose 3/16 to 149.
