Cisco and Topnet AG Announce IP+ATM Network; Topnet AG Expands
Portfolio of Services in Germany Based on Cisco Products; Topnet AG Joins the Cisco Powered Network Program

Business Editors & Computer Writers

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 5, 1999--Cisco
Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, today
announced Topnet AG, one of the leading Internet service providers in
Germany, has selected Cisco's IP+ATM end-to-end solutions for its new
network platform.
Topnet AG is able to rapidly deploy current IP solutions and a new
generation of diverse, profitable and enduring value-added services such as
integrated data, voice, video all over a single network.
Topnet AG is incorporating an advanced IP+ATM backbone into their
existing network using Cisco BPX(R) 8600 series wide-area switches. The
BPX 8600 uses MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) to quickly deliver
IP services. MPLS, based on Cisco's Tag Switching, is a new IETF
standard for IP service delivery. MPLS is rapidly becoming the de-facto
standard for delivering diverse and lasting IP services in service provider
networks.
According to recent benchmark studies conducted by leading German
computer magazines, Topnet AG offers the fastest Internet network in
Germany. Their IP+ATM network will enable Topnet AG to deploy
Internet access services as well as new advanced IP services including
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), Voice over IP (VoIP) and video over IP
to their customers in Germany.
The Cisco BPX 8600 series switch provides the industry's highest port
densities and unmatched ATM and IP scalability, enabling Topnet AG to
easily manage the accelerated growth of its networks. The BPX 8600 series
also brings the application richness of Cisco IOS(R) software to a
multiservice ATM environment. This capability allows Topnet AG to
maximize its return on investment by offering multiple revenue streams on a
single platform. The carrier-class reliability of the Cisco BPX enables
Topnet AG's services to be available around-the-clock.
"With Cisco's products, we were able to quickly move from purchasing
equipment to providing diverse services to our customers which made Cisco
the obvious vendor of choice for us," said Rolf Krause, director of Topnet
AG. "We believe customers want complete solutions from one ISP. With
our relationship and IP+ATM products from Cisco, we are able to provide
all the leading-edge and innovative services that our business customers
demand."
Cisco designed the BPX 8600 series wide-area switch to deliver
IP+ATM services with up to 19.2 gbps-switching capacity. Cisco's
end-to-end solutions for Topnet AG also include the Cisco MGX 8220
system shelf, the Cisco 7513 advanced router system (ARS) and the Cisco
Catalyst 2916 switching system.
"Topnet AG is an excellent example of how New World service
providers are aggressive and innovative in bringing new services to the
marketplace," said Brad Wurtz, vice president and general manager of
Cisco's Multiservice Switching Business Unit. "With a rich portfolio of layer
2 and advanced IP services, Topnet AG can meet the diverse service needs
of today's business customer."
As a member of the Cisco Powered Network Program, Topnet AG
provides networking services based predominately on Cisco equipment and
software. Topnet AG customers receive a high-performance network
solution that is reliable, secure and responsive to its current and future
business networking needs. Topnet AG's participation in the program --
including use of the Cisco Powered Network logo to brand its services --
demonstrates its ability to provide innovative solutions to help create a New
World networking infrastructure.
