Here's some research. Amazon, in the 3rd quarter lost 25 mil on revenue of 153 mil. Add those together and you get the total expense of r the quarter of 178 mil. They spent 37 mil on marketing so that leaves 141 mil to spend on just running the business. Servers, software, engineers, sales people, warehouse, phones, insurance and oh yeah books. How many groups of monkeys have a billion dollars a year to run a website out of their closet.

The myth is that it is cheap and easy to set up a website and sell stuff. Meaning anyone can do it. And it's true anyone can do it half assed. Just getting the infrastructure and distribution set up is a large endeavour before you even sell one widget. Then you will be playing catch up in the market place.

Another article in the same mag, Information week dec 7 issue, talks anout price not being the major consideration. Familiarity and trust, just like the real world.
