Committed to offering consumers the best combination of value, performance and leading-edge technologies, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ - news) today announced the North American availability of
powerful new Presario Internet notebooks and desktop PCs.

These new products continue the heritage of the popular Presario line -- they are aggressively priced and offer many more advanced features than competing systems from Dell(2).

''Last year, Compaq led the industry with products that truly enhanced the users' Internet experience and laid the foundation for our vision of the digitally networked home,'' said Rod Schrock, Senior Vice President and Group General Manager, Consumer Products Group, Compaq Computer Corporation. ''Today, we achieve a major milestone in delivering that vision as we launch a robust set of industry-leading home networking and Internet products -- and at an unbeatable value.''

These products are available today at retail and through Compaq's direct programs, including its ''Built For You'' configure-to-order retail program, now in more than 7,500 retail outlets across the country, Compaq's On-Line Store (www.compaq.com), or toll-free at 800-888-0220.

Presario Internet Notebooks Deliver Innovative Design,

Performance and Value

Bringing performance and value standards into the notebook category, Compaq delivers three new Internet notebooks -- the Presario 1900 Series, and the Presario 1255 and 1260 -- featuring innovative design,
performance and Internet functionality at aggressive price points.

All new models feature the Compaq Internet Zone with a one-touch ''Easy Scroll'' button, located near the touchpad, that allows users to quickly scroll through Web pages, documents, spreadsheets and more. The new notebooks also feature one-touch Internet access to Web searching, secure online shopping and a user-programmable Instant E-mail button.

The highly innovative Presario 1900 Series is the first ultra-thin and light DVD notebook with a unique detachable wedge. With this new design, customers get the ease of use of a full function notebook combined with the convenience of an ultra-thin and light product.

''Compaq pioneered the all-in-one notebook, and today has extended its leadership with a new twist -- the detachable wedge,'' said Greg Memo, Vice President and General Manager, Presario Mobile Products
Divison, Compaq Computer Corporation. ''Even at 5 pounds in weight and 1.2 inches thin, this remarkable product includes the latest technologies such as large 13.3-inch TFT displays, AGP graphics, and the fastest Intel® Pentium® II processors. With the wedge attached, the Presario 1900 Series also provides outstanding DVD movie playback.''

The Presario 1900 Series, available at retail at the end of the month, will include 64 MB of memory, hard drives up to 10 GB(3), and a smart high-capacity Lithium ION battery.

The newest additions to the 1200 series Internet notebooks are the Presario 1255 and Presario 1260, both with a 333 MHz AMD-K6®-2 Processor with 3DNow!™ Technology. ''With prices starting at $1,499 for 333 MHz of power on a notebook, Compaq delivers unrivaled value to home and small office/home office users,' added Memo.

The Presario 1255, priced at $1,499, is equipped with an integrated 56K ITU V.90 modem(4) for fast downloads, 32 MB of memory, a 24X Max(5) CD-ROM drive, a 4 GB hard drive, and 12.1-inch HPA display.
Starting at $1,799, the Presario 1260 features an integrated 56K ITU V.90 modem for fast downloads, 64 MB of memory, a 4 GB hard drive, a 24X Max CD-ROM drive, and 12.1-inch Active Matrix display.

Presario 5670 Offers Home Networking Solution Standard

The new Presario 5670 -- the latest addition to the award-winning 5600 Series of digital high-performance desktops -- sets the standard for home connectivity. Priced at $2,299, it comes with a home phoneline
network adapter that connects home computers using existing in-home phone wiring and allows users to share Internet access, printers, and more.

The Presario 5670 features a 1.5 Mb Max Digital Modem(6), allowing users to surf the Web at very high speeds, while making or receiving phone calls on the same line; a cable/ADSL modem-ready(7) 10Mbps
Ethernet port; the Compaq Digital Creativity Imaging Center(8) (with two IEEE 1394 ports and four USB ports), and a powerful Intel® Pentium® II 450 MHz processor. (For more information on Home Networking, see today's release, ''Compaq Unveils First Home Networked Broadband Internet PCs.'')

Presario 5600i Delivers Latest Technologies and Customer Choice

Exclusively available through Compaq's retail ''Built For You'' program and direct channels (Compaq's On-Line Store (www.compaq.com) or 1-800-888-0220), the Presario 5600i can be custom-configured to
meet the exact requirements of the customer. It is available with a range of processors from 350 MHz to 450 MHz; hard drives from 10 GB to 22 GB; up to 384 MB of memory; and a host of high performance graphics, speaker and audio options for the most demanding multimedia and gaming applications.

To turn the Presario 5600i into a home network-ready PC, a home phoneline network card is available for $49. The Diamond Multimedia HomeFree Phoneline Network PCI card is also available for $50. With this card, consumers can connect existing PCs to the Phoneline home network.

With prices starting as low as $1,419, including a V720 17-inch monitor (15.9-inch viewable image area), the Presario 5600i system is a remarkable value. Even when the Phoneline Home Networking option is included, the Presario 5600i offers more robust features, better expandability and a lower price when compared to comparable Dell(9) PCs.

For example, the Presario 5600i comes with an IEEE 1394 port for connectivity to the new generation of digital camcorders, and an integrated cable/ADSL modem-ready 10Mbps Ethernet Port for flexibility in upgrades to high performance Internet access. The Presario 5600i also comes with a Digital Flat Panel (DFP) Port -- which uses Silicon Image's PanelLink® Digital technology -- for connecting to Digital LCD
Monitors.

Several new graphics and audio options will be available later this month. New graphics options include the 16 MB Diamond Viper V550 FP (nVidia TNT), providing the highest performance 3D graphics available and supporting digital flat panels with its built-in DFP port.

New audio options include the Aureal 8820 PCI Audio Card, which supports both A3D Interactive 1.0 and DirectSound 3D 360(degree) Positional Audio for maximum software compatibility.

Also available is the Diamond Monster Sound MX300, powered by Aureal Vortex-2 PCI Audio Accelerator, which supports 360(degree) Positional Audio and four speaker output for an unmatched gaming and home-theater experience. It also features a connection for high-quality, digital audio surround-sound speaker and home entertainment systems.

New speaker options include Altec Lansing ADA310, which features a three-piece, USB controlled digital speaker system, and the JBL Pro Studio Speaker System with Dual Subwoofers (160 watts). With two-way
front and rear satellites and Dual Zone (40W front and 40W rear) subwoofers, the JBL Pro is the ultimate gaming and home theater speaker system. When purchased with the Diamond Monster Sound MX300 audio
option, the combination provides an unsurpassed PC audio experience.

The new 5600i also supports the optional Compaq Digital Creativity Imaging Center that provides convenient
access on the front of the PC to IEEE 1394 and USB ports and advanced video editing software for the
creation of custom videos, including combining multiple video and audio streams, transitions and other
special effects. When the Digital Creativity Center is selected, the Presario 5600i has a total of two IEEE
1394 ports and four USB ports for maximum connectivity.
