I think you meant 1999, not 1998! After reading your message, I called Schwab (I was skeptical of the dividend so I only bought 500 shares through Schwab yesterday at $9 - wow! what a run-up!) and their opinion is that "shareholders of record on January 6, 1999" refers to those whose buy date, not settlement date, is on or before January 6th. I hope they're right. However, the little research that I was able to do on "restricted shares" tells me that there may be a holding period of somewhere between 6 months and 2 years on the dividend shares.
