Canadian high-techs surge on bargain-hunting

TORONTO, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Canadian high-technology issues rallied on Tuesday as investors tore their gaze away from the hot Nasdaq market to look northward for bargains, analysts said.

''Any high-techs, people are buying,'' said Todd Kapala, investment specialist at Priority Brokerage. Toronto-listed firms have lagged the big gains in the technology-laden Nasdaq market over the last few months, he noted. ''The Canadian ones haven't done really as well.''

Analyst Howard Lis at Griffiths McBurney added that Canadian issues were due for an upward move. ''Just a bit of early year euphoria,'' Lis said.

Gains were posted by electronics manufacturing service provider Celestica Inc. (Toronto:CLS.TO - news) (NYSE:CLS - news), which rose C$2.10 to C$41.50, and cyberspace auctioneer Bid.Com International Inc. (Toronto:BII.TO - news), which added C$0.45 to C$4.25. Both are based in Toronto.
