I digress, but, that reminds of a story from the mainframe days. An MIS director at a large Atlanta-based air line, which will remain nameless, decided buy less expensive 3rd party tape drives for his IBM mainframe operation. After all, at 6250bpi tape drive is a 6250bpi tape drive, right.

As this MIS director was strolling through he computer room with the VP of finance, the VP noticed that the "new drives" were going forward and reverse noticeably more than the "old drives". The VP asks, "What is going on there." The MIS director replies, "We have a few problems with the new drive. They are having to do a lot of error recovery." The VP responds, "Looks to me like we may have saved too much money!"

The new drives were gone within a week and genuine IBMs were in their place.
