Gary,

My broker (to whom I paid a good commission) usually advised me of the "pit" actions. I had a rough idea of who were selling (big boyz or little guys) and to what extent the MMs were "shaking the trees" etc.

I may have paid $100 more in commission than most SIers who trade electronically, but the benefits (in my case) are far greater in magnitude.
