Started DELL COMPUTER, APPLE COMPUTER and GATEWAY INC as buy. Called Dell the top player within the PC universe. Said Apple was "perhaps best positioned and most attuned to exploit the growth of the Internet." Said Gateway could deliver upside earnings surprises in 1999. Started COMPAQ COMPUTER and MICRON ELECTRONICS INC as hold. Said Compaq faces two challenges: Integration of sales and services organization from Digital Equipment and re-engineering of its distribution logistics. * COMPAQ COMPUTER, in a move that was expected, said it would offer a series of desktop computers that allow users to digitally network their homes using existing phone lines. Compaq said the technology would allow customers to use simultaneously the Internet, print to a shared printer, and talk on the telephone. The company will offer a complete home system later this month. Each of the Presario Internet PCs includes a digital modem that can access the Internet at connections up to 25 times faster than current 56K modems. The computers further Compaq's attempt to offer home networking to retail customers. Later in January, Compaq said it will offer an entire home networking package. * COMPAQ COMPUTER and IBM CORP's Lotus Development Corp. said they have added two new offerings to their joint solutions portfolio for the North American market. The two new Compaq-Lotus knowledge management offerings include Knowledge Associates' Knowledger. The applications are designed to help organizations leverage resident information and expertise to improve business performance. Compaq and Lotus also said in a statement that they are expanding support for their knowledge management solutions portfolio through a relationship with CAMBRIDGE TECHNOLOGY PARTNERS, an international management consulting and systems integration firm.
