J L P, I'll give it a try. As I understand it, the "float" is what's left after the company offers shares for sale at the IPO, and keeps the rest. In other words, if a company issues 5 million shares, but only offers one million in the IPO, the One million is "in the float". The rest are "closely held". If I am wrong, I am sure it won't take someone long to correct me. Have fun, Phil
